From time to time, an employee gets off track. Whether it's related to performance deficiencies or violations of policy/procedure, a solid process for providing meaningful feedback can help employees to get back on track.
If an individual is unwilling or unable to make that change, the corrective action helps demonstrate that the employer gave appropriate notice of the expectation and the consequences for failing to meet those expectations. This is important for employee relations - and reducing the risk of legal liability.
